The Collegiate Academy of Blackman High School Application Process

 

Who should apply?

 

Current 8th grade students who are interested in being apart of The Collegiate Academy of Blackman High School should have at least a 3.0 GPA and be at or above the 80th percentile in a minimum of two areas of the TCAP for the previous two years.  The minimum TCAP scores are listed below.  Interested students should also embody the attributes outlined in the Academy Member Profile.

 

Application and Selection Process

Students will be required to complete an online application, submit a creative writing sample and statement of intent and go through the interview process.  Students will be awarded points based on grades, test scores, creative writing sample, interview, attendance and behavior and will be admitted based on total points.  Admissions Rubric is available by clicking the link.

 

  • Applications will be available on December 1st and must be completed and submitted by January 13th, 2016. You will receive a confirmation screen (or email) after application submission. Please print and keep the confirmation for your records. You can also save a pdf file of your completed application.    

 

  • Interviews will be held in the month of January.  Applicants will receive an invitation to sign up for an interview time.  Interviews will be held at Blackman High School and will be completed with a faculty member and a current student.  A copy of the Interview Questions are below and rubric are available by clicking the appropriate links.  Students should bring a copy of their most recent transcript, TCAP or other standarized test scores, attendance and discipline log.

    • 1. How do you think being in the Academy will benefit you?

    • 2. How do you deal with academic difficulty?

    • 3. Tell a story that directly and/or indirectly illustrates the type of person you are.

    • 4. As of right now, what do you see as your long term goals in life?

    • 5. What do you see as your strengths? Tell me about a time when you used this strength?

    • 6. What do you see as your greatest weakness? Tell me about a time that you overcame that

    • weakness?

    • 7. What local or global community service opportunity has meant the most to you and how has it influenced your future altruistic endeavors?

    • 8. Choose one quotation that defines who you are and explain why that quotation describes you so well.

    • 9. If you had a chance to have a 30- min conversation with any person in history (living or deceased), who would be the person you choose? Why? What topics would you discuss?

    • 10. What current events are you closely following and why?

    • 11. What academic, athletic, or extra-curricular activity has helped shape your life and future goals?

    • 12. Who is someone you look up to and why?

    • 13. How do you prioritize your time when have a lot of responsibility at once?

    • 14. Who has influenced you the most in your life?

    • 15. What do you hope to walk away with from high school?

 

  • Applicants will be required to complete a writing sample at the time of the interview.  Below are the questions in which you may choose from.

* Students can bring (2) 3x5 note cards with bullet points and fragments to help prepare

1. The lessons we take from failure can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you experienced failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?

2. Think back to a situation in your life where you had to decide between taking a risk and playing it safe. Which choice did you make? What was the outcome of your choice? Would you have made the same decision looking back on the experience or would you have made a different decision?

3. Good habits improve our physical and emotional health. Select one of your good habits and write an essay persuading readers to make that habit a part of their lives.

4. What is one problem the world needs to solve and provide an explanation and ideas on how to solve it.

5. Name one real life person and one fictional character you see as heroic. What makes them heroic? How are they similar and/or different?

6. What would you do to improve cultural relations in our school and how would these actions directly benefit us?

* Students who do not have TCAP scores will need to submit either nationally-normed or state-normed achievement test scores.  Students currently in the 9th or 10th grade must also submit their EXPLORE and/or PLAN and PSAT scores if applicable.

 

 

Selection Process and Important Dates

Students who desire to be a part of The Collegiate Academy of Blackman High School and live within the Blackman boundaries will be provided an opportunity to complete an application. Applications will be available December 1st.

Applications are due by January 13, 2016.

​

Interviews will be held January 19th through January 22nd.  (dates may change due to snow days)

 

Acceptance letters will be mailed by February 15, 2017.  

 

When applicants have been informed that they have been offered admission to the Academy, they will be required to submit an online Academy Commitment Letter to secure their admission.
